What is LTFS?

LTFS stands for Linear Tape File System.  It's an open standard that provides a file system interface to data stored on LTO.  LTFS allows users to access and manage data on tape in a manner similar to disk-based storage, making it easier to use and more compatible across different systems and software applications.  This technology enables users to browse, drag, and drop files directly to and from tape, simplifying data retrieval and management processes.  With LTFS, tape storage becomes more accessible, cost-effective, and scalable, making it an attractive option for long-term data retention and archival purposes.

LTFS provides a universal format for storing data on tape, enabling easy interchangeability across different operating systems.  Whether it's Windows, macOS, or Linux, LTFS ensures that data stored on LTO tape can be accessed and utilized across these platforms. 

With LTFS, accessing data stored on LTO tape becomes as straightforward as using a USB drive or external hard disk.  Users can browse, drag, and drop files directly from the tape, making data retrieval and management intuitive and user-friendly.
